Second in a series and I didn t read the first it reads well as a standalone. What I liked engaging story that runs at a moderate speed. What I didn t like not fully believable in the procedural aspect of it comparatively to other procedurals I ve read Repetitiveness Somewhat forced dialogue with the underlay of lesson that seemed unnecessary in how it was portrayed.Overall, a decent and fun read exactly what I was craving for.The story opened up with a thrilling confrontation between a victim and a blackmailer which subsequently developed into a shoot out, and the main two characters, Sheryn and her injured partner, Rafael set out for an investigation Jo, another main character and a possible fugitive at large gets soon apprehended and taken to hospital The gun that matches the bullet wound that killed the victim is found in Jo s possession, and all pieces of evidence point against Jo, making the case look like straight up clear cut easy but it doesn t take long to find out Jo is actually embroiled in a much bigger case As I mentioned earlier, I enjoyed reading this book quite a lot It s fast paced, and the flow maintained a steady pace from beginning to end The detailed descriptions of the investigation successfully kept my attention, and I particularly liked the plot is nicely convoluted with a lot of red herrings and possible suspects but not too much to tire readers out The complexity maintained at a perfect balance had me keep turning pages, eager to find out who the real villain is, and who is the mastermind behind all this. The way the case unravels itself is certainly note worthy. The case initially seemed quite simple and straight forward No complication involved, but as the story progresses, it started to dawn on me there s muchthan meets the eye to this case Jo, even the victim of the shootout and the possible blackmailer could have been manipulated by someone else, and the trajectory of the investigation changes accordingly That s where the plot thickened evenand got really interesting.I won t give away the plot any further, but I must say it was well thought out and executed I wasn t emotionally invested in the book that much initially, feeling that the writing a little too fluid albeit solid , but as the real picture of the case gets unraveled slowly but surely, I got totally sucked in the story and couldn t put it down The ups and downs and back and forth in the case added to the intrigue, it felt, like, one minute you were so sure you got all figured out but the next minute you were proved to have been all wrong Positively frustrating for sure, but that s the added beauty of this book, I must say.Although this is a second book in the series and I dove straight into it without reading the first book, I never felt I was missing something You can totally read this book as a standalone, and if you enjoy police procedurals, the odds are high that you ll like this book.Solid 4 stars go to this book and I thank Sheryn is the focus of the book She s a smart, feisty and strong willed female NYC detective I picture her as the amazing Viola Davis who balances home life with her demanding job Multiple POVs are used to tell the story and I enjoyed how the reader is pulled into the initial crime which then morphs into something much bigger I was intrigued in the beginning but found the middle slowed down and got a little repetitive But as the pieces come together, readers get pulled back into the story which culminates in an action packed ending that left this reader wantingfrom this new series While this is the second book of the series, it can be read as a standalone, but I d recommend fans of suspense read One Small Sacrifice and keep an eye on this author.Disclaimer My sincere thanks to Thomas and her blood was found at the scene. But wait, there sThe evidence is mounting as a video also surfaces with surprising information That information will be the crutch that never seems to go away.A hint of her past that she can no longer hide.A family feud of sorts that has been mounting ever since her sister died. Her sister Lori is not innocent and Jo may not be eitherWow What a revelation Conspiracy to murder Or wrong place wrong time So much behind the scenes action that you won t want to put this one down.No pun intended Thank you to Hilary, the publisher, NetGalley, andKindle for struggled to like Jo but I felt better about her in the end Sheryn is not as hard nosed as a lot of the cops in stories I read but she feels real She s compassionate and smart At times, I wanted a few of the characters to be a little edgier The story contains lots of twists Better than a 3 but really not a 4 star Jo, a successful NYC business owner, is being blackmailed over some photos and videos from her past that have recently surfaced But when the blackmail payoff turns deadly, Jo becomes the top suspect in the murder As detectives Sheryn and Rafael start to unravel the events of that day,
